Choose Happiness

This always makes me smile!

My last blog posting was all about dreaming big, so I’ve decided to demonstrate.

I am asking the Universe to show me how to share my ‘happiness revolution’ with the world.

Happiness is a choice, but most of us don’t even know where to begin to get happy. Ever thought you’d ‘be happy when … (fill in the blank) and when you got it or did it, the happiness wasn’t there? Yes, it’s happened to all of us. So, we carry on and do it again ~ find something that we think will make us happy, get it and feel the downer. I’ve beaten this and can help you to beat it too.

I’m ready to share my happiness revolution with the world. And, I’m not talking fluffy here ~ it takes accountability and commitment. There’s no room for fakers. I can walk with you on the journey, but you are going to explore what floats your boat and makes you happy. And it is so worth it! Woohoo!!!

Dear Universe,

Show me the path to sharing my happiness revolution. I am open to new possibilities and am ready to fly! I commit to making the world a happier place. I take accountability and commit to happiness!

Stay fabulous!!! Choose Happiness

Taking Dreams to Beliefs

Many people have contacted me over the years to ask how they might use their knowledge of or interest in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) into a new career path. Often people have collected some knowledge over the years, or they feel a real draw to helping others and want to learn more. Sometimes it’s quite simply an inner yearning that moves them. But they don’t know where to begin.

Unfortunately, for some the information required to start making a change in their career pathis too confusing.  There is so much information available on-line and so many ideas and opinions, so many different viewpoints and passions, people often get confused and don’t do anything. A kind of paralysis sets in and although they dream of making changes they don’t actually believe they can make the change happen.

The same applies to any kind of career change. Everything starts as a dream. All inventions started as dream. Every new idea or concept, everything we take for granted as part of our daily lives started as a dream. Did you ever think about that?  So, how does that apply to you? We started by talking about careers, well this is the School of Complementary Therapiesand that’s our business, training people to have successful careers in CAM. But it’s not just careers or career changes that begin with a dream. Everything begins with a dream.

Take a moment now to think about something that you would like to do: whether it is something as big as a career change, or as small as losing a few pounds. Picture what your life would be like if you made that change. My good friend Patricia Wall told me that as soon as you mention the word “change” to people, there is a part of them that goes into absolute fear and terror. We don’t like change as it feels unsafe, yet it’s the only thing we are guaranteed in life! Nothing stays the same, everything changes. How about taking charge of that, and deciding that you will make the changes and not just ride with them. How does that sound? Or more importantly, how does that feel?

Begin visualizing:

  • ·    Imagine what it would be like to achieve more of what you truly want.
  • ·    Imagine what it would be like to balance the different areas of your life.
  • ·    Imagine what your life would be like if you had higher self-confidence and self-worth.
  • ·    Imagine what it would be like to enjoy better health.
  • ·    Imagine what it would be like to have more energy.
  • ·    Imagine what it would be like to achieve your goals.

If you can do any of the above, you can begin to change your life to one that will be more fulfilling and happier. You can take charge of your life. Begin by dreaming. But the next step is to put the dreams into action. How often have you heard someone talk about how they’d spend their lottery winnings? They will get a far away look; dreaming and they might even have quite a detailed list of what they would do with a lot of money. However, ask them if they buy lottery tickets, and you might be quite surprised to find out that the dreaming isn’t connected to any form of action.

Result Imagery creates mental pictures of the goal or result as if it has already occurred. For example, if you are giving a talk to colleagues, you might imagine yourself confidently delivering the speech, hear the applause and imagine the positive outcome of your successful presentation. A 1967 study by stress researcher Edmund Jacobson found that visualizing an activity produces small but measurable reactions in the muscles involved in the imagined activity. Repeated mental rehearsal implants the learned memory of a successful action, and also conditions the unconscious mind with the outcome you expect to achieve. The clinical evidence has been used by the sporting world for years.

Don’t worry about the details of how they got there, or how you got there–just see the success. Then feel it! If you can’t “feel it”, then play with the visualization until you can. For example, if you try to picture a full-time career in CAM and it seems too far a stretch, make the dream smaller: begin by picturing working with clients in the evening a couple of nights a week. See how it feels. Or if the issue is weight loss and you have 50lbs to lose, try imagining what it would be like to be one size smaller: make it something you can believe.

The next step is to do something. It’s not enough to dream, you have to take some kind of action. This is the step that frightens people the most; getting started. If you wish to have a career in CAM, take a course. Take any course. Don’t worry about getting the right one or waiting until you have time or the kids have finished school, or any other thing that stops you from doing what you want to do. Take a step today. Make a commitment to yourself and your own well-being. Sign-up for a course, begin an exercise program, get professional help to make changes -just do it! And you begin the journey to leading the life you want to live.

I am available by telephone or email appointment to help you work with your specific dream. Put Your Angry Pants On

Regular meditiation has been proven to be beneficial in anger management ~ get my CD now!

Over the past 19 years I have had a private practice working in and teaching holistic health care, which gives me quite a bit of experience in working with people. One of the things I would like to share with you is how often I meet clients and /or students who have difficulty expressing their anger. They end up holding it in and bottling it up instead of letting it out in manageable ways. Men are especially likely to do this, however it is not an exclusively male trait!

One way we might see ourselves as suppressing our anger is transferring unresolved anger onto situations that maybe do not warrant it. For example you may become overly upset when driving and start feeling that surging rush of adrenalin. Unfortunately, suppressing your anger can lead to health issues. Studies have found that some people who do not express their anger transform it into physical ailments. These may include such symptoms as headaches and stomachaches. Even serious illnesses have been indicated as being aggravated or possibly induced by suppressing our feelings. Anger is emotion and can be safely released without doing damage to ourselves or others. Instead of bottling up your anger, learn how to let it out in non-aggressive ways.

Try the Following:

  • Learn to recognize your own personal physical signs of anger, such as headaches or tense muscles. Once you realize you are angry, take some time to determine the cause of the anger and take steps toward resolving it.
  • When you are angry, distinguish between the mildly annoying and the infuriating. Like the driving analogy mentioned above. Look at what else you may be feeling when you are most angry. Do you have a sense of lack of power? Do you feel guilty? Is there confusion or a sense of unfairness at the basis of the feeling? Recognizing your anger and identifying where it comes from may help with constructive expression.
  • Exercise is so useful in releasing angry and pent-up feelings, both immediate and long-term. We all know that moving the body is important to our health and well-being, well here’s another reason to add some form of daily exercise to your wellness plan.
  • Try talking things over with a good friend. I don’t mean get into the habit of moaning and whining, I mean take the time to express your feelings and then let it go.
  • Consider using psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, or spiritual counseling to deal with your anger. Sometimes we just cannot do it all alone. And of course, do not forget to bring meditation and relaxation into your life. Take time for yourself to just sit and breathe quietly. I recommend ten long slow deep breaths at least once a day. This can help bring calmness throughout your body, mind, spirit and emotions. Meditation is easy to learn, start by finding a quiet spot and counting your breaths.
  • And remember to treat yourself to some type of bodywork, whether it be an aromatherapy massage, a reflexology or reiki treatment once a month, when someone else can look after you!
  • And sometimes we just have to ‘put on our angry pants’ and get good and angry … feel the emotion and stomp, shout and have a good old temper trantrum. It releases the anger beautifully from our body, right down to our cells. Just be angry … don’t turn it on anyone or anything!

Remember, that anger sometimes is just a reminder that we need to take some time out to care for ourselves and put our needs first. If you would like to learn more, please drop me an email or call for an appointment.

Damn Martha Stewart!

Jacqueline definitely not having a MS moment ~ tea time in Victoria, BC, where someone else made the tea and treats!

I woke up bright and early this Saturday morning and thought I’d start the day with a nice cuppa tea. Okay, there’s nothing very unusual about that ~ teehee! I waved hubby off to work and curled up on the sofa; large and lovely mug of steaming English Breakfast Tea, puppy curled in a ball at my feet. Life is good! And I picked up the latest copy of Martha Stewart Living, thinking I’d treat myself to a little ‘me’ time with a nice magazine.

Damn Martha Stewart!

Ooh was followed quickly by aah, as I perused the glossy pages, soaked up the gorgeous images, laughed at the playfully written alliterations. And my early start to relaxation disappeared! Out came the notepad and a pen as my excitement grew. Yes, yes, I must go to Staples and get some of those fabulous office organizing thingies in assorted beautiful and harmonious colors. Ooh, there’s a coupon too. Yummy, I’d like to make a curried, red lentil, dried cherry and coriander soup…oh, oh, yes, and a scalloped potato dish with fresh morels, heavy cream, leeks and green garlic. My list was growing…

Next the notion just flew into my head ~ I definitely need to label everything in the cupboards…such pretty labels. And on to the spring cleaning! Having just had the house painted, I’ve got a head start ~ the shopping list was growing exponentially as I added natural cleaning products and beautiful bottles to keep them in. Finally, I was getting excited about gardening ~ imagining myself in the garden, wooden box of pristine gardening tools, straw hat on my head, pretty gloves to protect my hands…

It’s 7:30 and I’m exhausted. I’ve shopped ’til I dropped! The inadequateness (is that a real word?) of my day is flooding in. I have a to-do list to beat the band! Stop! I decided to lie down on the sofa and close my eyes. Images of organizing in pretty shades, serving fabulous meals on co-coordinating platters, I’m arranging flowers in pleasing shapes and whizzing around with a duster like Doris Day in an old movie flood my mind. (Yes, in my mind I was wearing a 1950′s type dress with an apron, and somehow my unruly red curls had become pristine blonde hair.) Gradually my breathing returned to normal.

I have thrown my list in the bin! I am sitting at my slightly messy desk, sipping another cup of delicious tea. The puppy still sleeps curled at my feet. All is well…

Apart from a few eerie crevices of my mind…hmmm, I do have to go to the grocery store anyway, perhaps the scalloped potatoes…hmmm, I’ll grab the polish and get my desk gleaming this afternoon…it hasn’t all gone away, the ideas lurk in the depths of my mind. As I said at the beginning, ‘Damn Martha Stewart’.

(Disclaimer: Just to make it clear, I mean no offence to MS ~ I absolutely love her and will continue to once a month drive myself insane by enjoying her fabulous magazine ~ lol!)

A Plea for Compassion

Jacqueline Fairbrass walking 'Eddy' on Rockaway Beach. Eddy, an abandoned pit bull rescued by Jacqueline and her husband, is a loving, intelligent, affectionate dog! In Ontario he would be euthanized because of his breed. Support Ontario Bill 16 on February 23! Support compassion every day!

I ask you to remember the words of Mahatma Ghandi, ‘The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated‘.

Thousands of healthy, innocent, blameless dogs that have been classified as pit bulls are facing homelessness or death because of Ontario’s ban on pit bulls. ‘Pit bull-like’ is an ambiguous term, open to abuse and questionable interpretation. A pit bull may be any of several breeds of dogs whose origin can be traced back to a bull-dog terrier mix. That said, the breed of an animal does not determine its temperament; a dog’s behaviour is reflective of how it is raised and treated. Pit bull breeds have become famous for their roles as soldiers, police dogs, search and rescue dogs, actors, television personalities, seeing-eye dogs and celebrity pets.

An electronic search of newspaper articles by Dr. Malathi Raghavan, DVM, PhD, found that pit bulls were not responsible for 1 of 28 (3.6%) dog bite-related fatalities reported in Canada from 1990 through 2007. ( Raghavan, Malathi (June 2008). “Fatal dog attacks in Canada, 1990–2007″. The Canadian Veterinary Journal (La Revue vétérinaire canadienne) 49 (6): 577–581. PMC 2387261. PMID 18624067.) The study also notes that ‘A higher proportion of sled dogs and, possibly, mixed-breed dogs in Canada than in the United States caused fatalities, as did multiple dogs rather than single dogs. Free-roaming dog packs, reported only from rural communities, caused most on-reserve fatalities‘.

In a world where we fight to prevent the endangerment of undomesticated species it is inconceivable to encourage the wiping out of a domesticated species: one of man’s best friends. Please do the right thing and support Ontario Bill 16 on February 23rd. Thank you.

Happy Tea Drinking

Remember Peter Rabbit? After a day pilfering the farmer’s cabbages, Peter had a tummy-ache. So, what did his mum do? Gave him a nice cup of chamomile tea, and sent him to bed. Well, this remedy works for people as well as rabbits! Want to learn more? Then read on…

Second to water, tea is the most popular drink on the planet. Yes, even more popular than coffee! Tea has been around for years and is considered one of the world’s oldest beverages. It warms you up when you are cold, comforts when stressed, energises when you need a pick-me-up, and tastes good too! And currently, is one of the trendiest drinks, gaining popularity with the rich and famous.

What is Tea?

JF taking time out for a tea-break.

There are two major branches of tea, the ‘herbal’ variety and ‘real’ teas. The difference? Herbal teas contain no tea. Herbal teas are made only with brewed herbs. Real or true tea is made from the leaves of the tea bush, Camelia sinensis. Real teas include oolong, black and green. Herbal teas may be made with hundreds of different herbs–alone or mixed together to form blends. The third type of tea available, and this often confuses people, is flavored tea. Flavored teas very often contain a mixture of black tea and herbs or oils. For example, one of my favourite teas is Earl Grey; a blend of black tea and oil of bergamot.

“Tea – the cups that cheer but not inebriate.” William Cowper

Tea time has never been so good… All tea offers health benefits. You just have to pick the right one for what ails you. Black, green and oolong teas offer you a dose of flavonoids, which some scientists believe lower our risk of cancer and heart disease. Flavonoids help to protect our body cells from free radicals, which destroy body cells. Is that why us tea drinkers look younger than coffee drinkers?

Name that tea!

Orange pekoe – your regular black tea. Not an actual type of tea, but a cut of leaf. Small pieces of tea to make it quick and strong. Darjeeling – delicate black tea. The tea of choice for those of us who do not like a strong, dark cup. Known as the champagne of teas!

English Breakfast (or Scottish, or Irish) robust black tea. Good as a ‘pick-me-up’, either in the morning or in the afternoon.

Green tea – subtle and fresh, as long as you don’t over steep. Often served in Chinese and other Asian restaurants, this tea is currently the tea of choice for health and well-being.

Oolong – more delicate than orange pekoe in flavor and color.

All the above teas contain some caffeine. A general rule is the stronger the tea the more caffeine. So these teas do work to lift your mood, and cannot be consumed willy-nilly before bedtime.

Herbal Teas

Obviously the benefits derived from herb teas depend on which herb the tea is made with. A really simple way to enjoy herbal tea is to pick fresh herbs from the garden, pop them in a teapot and add boiling water. Steeping time depends on the herbs, but between 5 and 20 minutes is a guideline. Sip and see if it’s ready for you.If you are new to drinking herb teas, you probably will not like the idea of drinking something that tastes too ‘twiggy’. So, let’s start with a few ‘beginner’ herbal teas:

Peppermint – good hot or cold, this refreshing tea is gentle on the digestive tract and therefore very suitable after dinner. Use cold peppermint tea bags on your forehead to sooth a headache—lie down and relax for 20 minutes.

Chamomile – another herb tea that works hot or cold and is good for the digestive tract. Some people find this tea very sweet, and it has long been recommended for children. Only thing to watch is allergies to members of the asteracea family. If you use teabags, save them and when they are cool, lie down and put them on your eyes…any puffieness is reduced and after 10 minutes your eyes will feel refreshed.

Lemon Balm – This herb grows easily in the garden and can be made by filling a mason jar with herbs and covering with water. Leave on your windowsill in the morning and come home to a cu’ of “sun tea’. Lemon balm has a gentle lemon taste that is refreshing and uplifting without caffeine. Putting the herb in your bath along with some Epsom salts will help to soften your skin.

Rosehip – Fruity tasting herb tea available in tea bags, high in the favonoids mentioned earlier and Vitamin C. This was often given to babies in the UK as a dietary supplement. I guess we had to start drinking tea at some time!

If you would like more information on how herbs can be introduced into your diet to help your health, please call me for an appointment at 206.201.2764.

Happy Tea Drinking!

Healing Power of Love

As I watched my puppy playing in the snow this morning my mind drifted back to when we got him. Eddy is an American Staffordshire Bull Terrier, aka a ‘pitbull’. He’s a beautiful brown brindle, with tuxedo markings and he weighs about 75lbs, runs as fast as a train and bounces up to about six feet in the air. But when we got him almost a year ago now, he was a scared little boy.

Eddy had spent the first year of his life on a chain, on his own, outside. When I pulled out the leash to take him for a walk, he hid ~ frightened that he’d be put outside again. He didn’t know how to play; just didn’t understand the concept of playing with toys or running and chasing. Eddy didn’t know how to accept affection, so giving him a cuddle turned into a battle. He had no manners, no social skills and hated to go for a walk or a ride in the car incase he was abandoned again.

This morning I watched Eddy play in the snow. He bounced, snuffled his nose into it, chased snow flakes and spun around and around on the slippery porch. As I laughed, I took a moment to give thanks for the wonderful blessing he is in my life and I realized just how far Eddy has come. Eddy has been healed by love. He now walks on a leash, trotting along beside me as I walk down the country lanes. He has learnt how to heel, to come, down, stay out of the kitchen when I’m cooking, to roll-over for a treat and to shake paws. Eddy can now play: loving his favorite toys, chewing his ‘tires’, chasing and fetching; even wrestling with my hubby and my brother.

And Eddy now loves to cuddle! If given half a chance, he’s the biggest lap-dog in the world…lol! He sneaks his head onto my lap while I’m knitting or watching TV, and I swear he’s sending me telepathic messages “Love me, love me, love me!” He sleeps under my desk when I’m writing or working at the computer. He sits by the door waiting, when hubby is due home from work. He leaps into my car to go for a ride.

If the power of love can turn around the life of a neglected dog, what can the power of love do for us? Choose kindness, be loving and stay strong ~ perseverance pays off. Take time to allow people to be and don’t judge; give them room to change and keep loving them. In less than a year I’ve seen a scared puppy grow into a happy, healthy dog. What magic will we generate in this world if we take this to the people we meet?

I believe in the healing power of love.
