Save Time & Money by House Cleaning Naturally

House Cleaning the Natural Way | Jacqueline Fairbrass | Aromatherapist

Has the Spring Cleaning bug got to you yet? It has definitely taken hold here at the Fairbrass household. And I’m excited to share with you House Cleaning the Natural Way

As soon as the weather starts to warm up I start to fling open windows and let the fresh air sweep through the whole house. No Febreze needed!

And how about that sunshine? Showing up all the dust and smears that have accumulated under cover of the gloomy winter. Yes, it’s time to get cleaning and polishing.

But I have a confession to make. (Pause for dramatical type music.)

I’ve been a Cleaning Product Addict. Yes, an addict. Each time a new product appears on the market or I see a new commercial, I’ve been sucked in. Oohs and aahs follow! And I rush off to the store to buy, buy, buy. Bring home and clean, clean, clean.

Then I moved to the country. I now live on a septic system and a well. And I started to think about what I might be putting into the ground.

As an Aromatherapist since the early 90s, I know that essential oils are powerful chemicals and can be used for many purposes. I’m a big fan of using them for home health care and of course, my Aromatherapy Massage clients leave purring with contentment. However, I haven’t really used them much around my home.

My daughter Emma, who is also an Aromatherapist, has for years been a big fan of Aromatherapy and essential oils for household cleaning…but it hadn’t rubbed off until now!

Now my daughter Sarah has two kiddies at home and another little one on the way. As well as two cats and a dog as well as hubby in the home. And I was recently introduced to how modern mums are super busy making their own cleaning products, even soap! Well, not being one to ignore trends, I put together a PDF for Sarah, full of information about natural cleaning products, essential oils and recipes for making the House Clean and Healthy.

And of course, I thought I’d share!

House Cleaning the Natural Way | Aromatherapist | Jacqueline FairbrassAnd here’s a few of my…

Quick Top Tips:

  • White vinegar has amazing natural cleaning and deodorizing properties. But I hate how it makes my home smell like a fish and chip shop! I grew up as a teen in a English seaside resort and the smell of fish and chips is coupled with vinegar for me. The smell does go away as the vinegar dries; however, if you would rather not have that fish and chip shop aroma, a small amount of lemon juice added to vinegar-based cleaning solutions will help neutralize the smell.
  • Kids’s Rooms Smelly? Pumping a few sprays of quality essential oil hydrosol into the air of a room is one of the simplest ways to aromatize and cleanse your children’s bedrooms and playroom. Lavender, neroli and rose hydrosols are particularly nice.
  • Stinky Ol’ Garbage pails? Simple aromatic solution to Grubby Bins include adding two drops of lemongrass onto a dampened cleaning cloth for use to wipe the inside of waste baskets. (Thanks to Emma for that tip!)
  • Be Gone Pet Smells I love my dog, but he can be stinky… Allow your vacuum cleaner to suck up half a tissue with 3 to 5 drops of an essential oil on it. It will aromatize the air while you clean.

And don’t forget to help yourself to a free copy of House Cleaning the Natural Way for the Pelchat Family (just click on the link) for lots more tips, recipes and information about Natural Cleaning Products.

Ooh…before I forget. House Cleaning the Natural Way is much less expensive than buying all those products that are advertised. Now only am I keeping my environment healthy, I’m saving tons of money at the same time. Now, hasn’t that got to be worth trying?

I have been using a super homemade all-purpose cleaner. I squeeze some eco-friendly dish soap into a spray bottle, and add approximately 3 times the same amount of vinegar. Swirl it around to mix. I love it because it makes everything shiny and cleans so well. You may have to play around with the ratios to get it how you like it. It doesn’t work so well with the Nature Clean brand dish soap which turns into a yucky clumpy suspension in the vinegar.

Great…my dad always cleaned his motel windows with white vinegar and newspapers. Cheap and cheerful!

We’re not quite ready to open all the windows here in Portland, but I’m definitely feeling the urge to do some spring cleaning. These are some great tips. Thx!

Be brave and fling ’em open, if only for ten minutes. I’m heading to Portland next weekend and hoping there will be some roses in bloom…sending you warm weather vibes! xox

Cool idea – adding lemon juice to vinegar. Liked that tip a lot! Thanks.

    • Jacqueline Fairbrass on April 26, 2014 at 7:16 am

You are most welcome. It cuts the smell, but also boosts grease cutting. And for me, I just love the scent of lemon.

Thanks Jacqueline… my sister has her own housekeeping business and uses white vinegar but I don’t think she knows that lemons will cut the strong scent. I’m passing these tips on to her. I also love the idea of sucking up a scented tissue while vacuuming. Going to try that one for sure.

Glad to be of help…I hope your sister enjoys adding some lemon. And let me know how it goes with the tissues. Thanks for dropping by and sharing.

Making homemade cleaning products is simple, affordable, and also awesome. Among the good things around homemade natural cleaners is that most of them are created from the exact simple ingredients.

    • Jacqueline Fairbrass on May 5, 2014 at 5:40 am

Yes…it’s simple to do using simple ingredients. How does it get any better than that?
