Do you have a ‘support group’?
Not only for 12-steppers, but for all of us!
12 Step programs, like Alcoholics Anonymous, are so amazingly successfully because they not only address an issue, like alcoholism. But they also bring like-minded people together.
‘But I don’t need a support group. I don’t have a problem.’
We all have problems. The day-to-day stuff that gets us down. Like, the kids are acting up. Or hubby is driving me nutz. My computer crashed and I have a dead-line. Even, I got to the store and they had run out of my fave chocolate bars.
(Actually, that last one just might have me on the phone to you, sobbing a little!)
Whether big or small, we all have times when we need to reach out. We all have times when we need to be heard.
So, this week’s challenge is to grab a pad and pen. (For us oldies anyhoos, maybe you might use your phone instead.) Then write down a list of friends you can count on.
Why?
Studies prove that people need community to be happy and healthy. We are hard-wired to belong.
Always relying on one person, whether that’s your bestie or your sweetie, isn’t enough. Think about it. You can’t be there for someone all the time. So, you can’t expect one person to be there for you all the time.
That’s why we need a support group! Yay!
When going through my divorce. Being left a single mum, with two teens and an Akita to care for, there were times I just needed to let off steam. And be heard!
That’s where I developed the idea of a Support Group.
I posted a list of buddies by the phone. (Yes, back in the day before we had the list on the phone!) And when overwhelm hit, I’d call until I got someone who had ten minutes to listen. (Yes, ten minutes. Whining isn’t encouraged…getting it off your chest, so you can more on, is.)
So, lovely, my challenge for you this week, is to create that list. And remember, I’m one of your supporters too!
Stay tuned, Share with your friends, and most importantly,
Stay fabulous,
