Blue Jay Choose Happy Lessons

October 17, 2012 By Jacqueline 12 Comments

Blue Jay Choose Happy Lessons
Ted planning his next assault on the feeder

Did you know that blue birds are known as the birds of happiness? As I start to write this, there is a big blue jay outside my office window. (The ones here are actually the teal stellar jays.)

At least one of 4 that hang out in my back garden is always around in the morning right now.

I call this one Ted, after my grandad, but that’s another story. Anyhoos, Ted the Blue Jay flys to a branch just above the seed bird feeder that hubby hung in the tree outside my office window. Ted then flys into the feeder trying to land on it, but he’s too heavy. He manages to grab a seed or two and lands on the ground.

Next thing, Ted starts again. Bops back to the branch and flies at the feeder, gets a seed, lands on the floor and … well, you get it.

As I’m watching Ted, I’ve become aware of how important persistence is in getting what we want. It’s easy to say ‘I Choose Happy’ but sometimes we need help to keep going. And sometimes we need a break…

The seed feeder is designed for small birds, like the chickadees that are always bopping around here. Yesterday Ted the blue jay realized that if he just hit the feeder hard, seed fell out on the floor. So, he changed his tactic from pecking at the odd seed to knocking down more seeds onto the ground.

He works really hard every day … and yesterday was a break through day for him. Of course, one of the other blue jays  turned up straight away and started getting into the pile of seeds he was making himself. He got chased off! Earlier this morning he’s seen off his buddy and has been enjoying a big breakfast of seeds from the ground.

But as the morning has progressed, all 3 of his buddies have turned up and there is enough now; Ted is sharing!

I know that tomorrow they’ll all have learned to bash the seed feeder. I’m watching them takes turns. Sometimes we need some help to get us to the next level. I see myself in Ted! He’s persistent, he’s making changes and he’s sharing and teaching his buddies.

That’s me! I’ve studied, experimented, gone through some crap, taken a few knocks and today I’m the Happiness Coach. I now help others to Choose Happy & Stay Fabulous.

So, I thought I’d share this with you today. Persistence pays off! And sometimes we need some help.

😀 Choose Happy & Have a break through day!

Jacqueline, thank you for sharing how if we really observe closely…nature teaches us about life lessons. Your post made me smile and laugh out loud. I love your sensibilities! Some days, I think what I gotta do a bit more is this…”Yesterday Ted the blue jay realized that if he just hit the feeder hard, seed fell out on the floor.”

It’s so nice of Ted to share with his friends!

Being happy IS a choice and often times it takes persistence and lots of practice to keep shifting your mind into a happy place. It’s well worth the work!

Just checked out the Totem animal messages and found out that ‘determination’ is one of Blue Jay’s messages to us! Looking to nature…woohoo!

few days ago I came to the conclusion that persistence is the key, and your article was an additional confirmation. I like your observation about birds’ behavior, especially, the the part about sharing and supporting others

Some days are easier than others to choose happy, but that’s okay. It’s the duality in life that keeps things interesting.

You bet…by knowing we have the choice we can strengthen that ‘happy’ muscle and it becomes easier!
